Else Was Filling.
Sifu Edward Armstrong saw the same thing at every convention, every fan event, every online community. Millions of people who had bought a light sword and had nowhere to go with it. No training. No structure. No community built for them. Traditional martial arts schools weren't interested.
So he built the infrastructure for a category that didn't exist: a full 9-form curriculum drawing from 12+ martial arts traditions, a complete rank system, a competitive league, and a conversion model. He built it here, in Norfolk. Tested it here. Proved it here.
Everything the LSTA network runs on today was designed, tested, and proven on this floor.
As a founding-academy case study, this location converted the large majority of Day Pass participants into enrolled academy students. A real-world result produced using the same system every LSTA Commander operates today.

By 2015, Edward had built a nationally recognized light sword academy here in Norfolk. 68 students. Entrepreneur of the Year. ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox all covered what was happening on this floor.
In 2016, the franchise that gave the sport its international structure betrayed the warriors and operators inside it.
In 2017, Edward and Julliana Armstrong walked away, and rebuilt LSTA from scratch, joined by founding masters Sijo Nathan Young (2× World Champion) and Sifu Nick Benseman (Hollywood stunt director, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), who had survived the same betrayal. Sifu Julliana Armstrong is a 3× WEKAF National Champion, NASM-certified, and held U.S. military contracts at Langley AFB and Fort Eustis.
LSTA is the rebuild.
Every other location in the network (Axiom in Denver, Saber Core in Connecticut, the rest), runs the curriculum that was rebuilt on this Norfolk floor by the four people you’ll meet next.

What to Expect
at Any LSTA Academy
No experience required. No saber required for your first session. Here is exactly what happens.
60–90 minutes. Warm-up, technique instruction, live drills, controlled sparring. You will work. You will leave different than you arrived.
Comfortable clothes you can move in. Water. If you own a light sword, bring it. If not, loaners are available for your first session.
Students across all rank levels training the same curriculum together. The standard is consistent. The welcome is real. You will be challenged, not hazed.
You begin at White Sash, Form I: Foundation Strike. Most students demonstrate Yellow Sash readiness within 4–8 weeks of consistent attendance. Rank is earned, not given.

Academy students are eligible to participate in Shadow Circle gatherings. Local in-person events where Warriors train together outside scheduled classes. Norfolk runs the charter gathering that every future Circle in the network was modeled on.

LSTA Norfolk is the founding academy. The original location where the nine-form system was built, taught by LSTA Founding Masters Sifu Edward Armstrong and Sifu Julliana Armstrong. It is certified to teach the complete curriculum: all nine forms, from Foundation Strike (Form I) through Master’s Unity (Form IX).
The LSTA 9-form system synthesizes classical fencing, Chinese broadsword, historical European swordplay, and nine other martial arts traditions into a single, structured curriculum. Not a collection of techniques, a designed system, with each form building on the last.
Every rank earned at LSTA Norfolk is recognized at every academy in the network worldwide, now and as the network grows. The standard is the same everywhere because it was designed to be the same everywhere.
Foundation Strike → Flowing Defense → Circle of Power. Stance, grip, footwork, redirection, circular power. The foundation every advanced technique is built on.
Iron Will → Lightning Speed → Dual Harmony. Athletic combat, rapid combinations, dual-weapon mastery. Live sparring is standard at this level.
Phoenix Rising → Dragon's Breath → Master's Unity. Complete integration, tournament competition, teaching methodology. The pinnacle.
Every LSTA academy worldwide operates under the same license, the same curriculum, and the same Code of S.A.B.E.R. The rank you earn at LSTA Norfolk is the rank you hold at Saber Core in Connecticut, Axiom in Denver, Saber Warriors in LA, or any academy in the network. Same art. Same standard. Every city. Three reasons
LSTA training isn’t the right fit for you.
Norfolk’s in-person chapter has concluded. Training today happens online through Shadow Warrior or in person at a licensed LSTA academy. Before you plan either, here’s who shouldn’t.
LSTA training is 13+, teens and adults. The majority of Warriors are working professionals, though qualified teens 13–17 train alongside them. We don’t run children’s classes for under-13, birthday parties, or family-format programming. Younger students looking for sword work need to look elsewhere. That’s a different discipline and we don’t fake it.
The 9-form progression assumes you train at least once a week. Showing up monthly when work permits doesn’t build the muscle memory or the rank progression that makes the discipline rewarding. If your schedule is too volatile to protect a weekly slot, defer until it isn’t. We’ll still be here.
LSTA is structured combat: contact, drilling, sparring, ranked progression. If your interest in the weapon is theatrical or aesthetic, the rigor here will frustrate you. We respect performance art; we’re not it.
