What Is Solo Forms?
Solo Forms is solo performance: one practitioner, a prescribed form, and five certified judges who score every movement. Technique, power, rhythm, and expression are all evaluated independently. There is no opponent to obscure weaknesses. The form reveals exactly what the competitor has built.
Within the Federation's structure, Solo Forms is the technical standard that anchors the sport. It is what takes light sword martial arts from "activity" to "discipline", and every sanctioned performance contributes to the competition record advancing the sport toward international recognition.
Every sanctioned result in this format becomes part of the official competition record. When you compete, you are not just earning a placement. You are adding your name to the record that defines this sport's history and supports its pathway to the World Games.
Solo Forms
Solo performance. Prescribed forms. Judged on technique, power, rhythm, and expression.
Three Components. One Number That Doesn't Lie.
Five certified judges score your performance independently across three components. The highest and lowest scores are dropped. What remains is a single score out of 10.0 that reflects the actual depth of your training, not how you felt about the performance.
Assessment of correct stance, footwork, blade technique, power, speed, and precision of each element against the Federation Technical Standard. Scored by four Line Judges, highest and lowest dropped.

Competition Rules
The complete Federation forms ruleset applies to every sanctioned event. Competitors are expected to know their division's rules before competition day. Review the standards below.
- Competitor must hold current Federation academy membership at time of registration.
- Competitor must perform in the division corresponding to their current certified rank. Competing below current rank is not permitted. Competing above is permitted and encouraged.
- Masters Division requires a letter of invitation from the Competition Director or a qualifying score from a prior Federation-sanctioned event (minimum 7.5).
- Age minimum: 13 years. No upper age limit. Age-specific sub-divisions created upon request of five or more competitors.
- Federation-approved polycarbonate saber. No metal components except for hilt. Blade must pass pre-competition inspection.
- Full protective kit mandatory: mask, gorget, chest protector, and gloves. Gear worn from floor entry to departure.
- Uniform: LSTA-branded gi or equivalent solid-color martial arts uniform. No logos from competing organizations.
- Rank documentation must match the division entered. Entry into an incorrect division results in withdrawal before performance begins.
- Competitor enters performance floor only after being called by the head referee. Unauthorized entry is a −0.2 deduction.
- Opening salutation performed facing the referee panel. Form begins only after the head referee signals readiness.
- Timer starts at first technique following salutation. Salutation is not timed. Timer ends at final stance hold.
- After completion, return to salutation position, face the panel, and wait for dismissal. Departing early forfeits the Expression score.
- Three certified Federation referees per event. Masters Division requires five referees including one nationally certified official.
- Head referee score weighted 2×. Final score = Final = (Avg Technical Quality) + Difficulty + (Avg Overall Performance) − Deductions.
- No referee may score a competitor from their own home academy. Conflict of interest declared before competition draw.
- Referee variance greater than 0.5 triggers mandatory review. Head referee holds final authority after review.
- All Forms Division results submitted to the Federation within 48 hours of competition completion.
- Gold, Silver, and Bronze awarded in each division with four or more competitors. Fewer than four receive certificates of participation.
- Masters Division scores enter the Federation National Rankings System and contribute to the national competition record.
- Appeals submitted in writing to the Competition Director within 30 minutes of result posting. Filing fee: $25, refunded if appeal is upheld.
