The Code of S.A.B.E.R.
Five principles every athlete signs before competing, and the only character framework that maps cleanly to all Four Core Values the YMCA already evaluates programming against. The Mobile License qualifies for the following grant categories. LSTA provides supporting documentation on request.

Light Sword Martial Arts Federation
Virginia nonprofit. 45 governing documents. Constitution, bylaws, competition rulebook, anti-doping policy, referee certification standards. In 2019, Sijo Nathan Young took Light Sword Martial Arts to the global stage. Competing at the WAC World All-Style Championship in Portugal and Spain. This was the moment LSMA entered the international competitive record, establishing the foundation for the national federation pathway and the World Games bid.
Eastern Regionals
The first sanctioned LSMAF competition is the LSMAF Eastern Regionals, scheduled for June 30, 2027 in Connecticut. Saturday league participants are building their documented competitive record toward this event from day one.

In 2015, Edward Armstrong built a light sword martial arts academy in the United States: 68 students, Entrepreneur of the Year, featured on ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox. Sijo Nathan Young, Sifu Julliana Armstrong, and Sifu Nick Benseman built the curriculum, the institutional partnerships, and the safety protocols alongside him.
In 2016, the franchise that gave the sport its international structure betrayed the warriors and operators inside it.
In 2017, all four walked away, and rebuilt from scratch, on their own terms, engineered against the exact failure modes they had survived.
That rebuild is why this partnership exists.
When you partner with LSTA, you become part of a federation built by people who refuse to let predatory operator terms or unsupported franchisees happen again. The terms you see on this page aren’t generous because we’re trying to win you. They’re what we wish we’d had.

this isn’t the right program for your chapter.
Adding any new programming to a YMCA chapter takes real codesign work. Before you advocate this internally, here are three reasons it might not fit.
The Code of S.A.B.E.R. character framework is the spine of why this works for YMCA mission alignment. If your chapter has a cultural objection to martial-arts-rooted programming on principle, the integration will be uphill regardless of the sport’s mechanics.
Saber Tag league play is teens-and-adults (13+) with safety protocols designed for that age range. We don’t serve under-13 as a primary demographic. If that’s your chapter’s main programming gap, this isn’t the right partnership.
Founding-partner pilots require iterative codesign cycles. We ship a version, your chapter tests, we adjust together. If decisions at your branch require six-week committee approvals every step, the codesign cadence will outpace your governance and the pilot will stall.
